William Hill
You may not come from the UK, but if you did then you would have seen a William Hill betting shop in seemingly every high street. That is reassuring when it comes to joining their online betting site.

William Hill has been a legal bookmaker since the 1960s when they were first licensed and regulated in the UK. Now of course this huge brand, and publicly listed company, serves the world and nearly all nationalities – not just the British.

This depth of history should give you, a potential new player at their website, a sense of trust in the firm. It is good to know the company you are about to partner for betting has been trading for over 50 years and nobody has bad word to say about it. In fact they have won a host of awards, including Online Operator of the Year on one occasion.

Free Bet Details

The William Hill free bet is £25 or your currency equivalent but you must use the promotional code ‘F25’ on the registration form when you join to get this. The way it works is that they will equal the value of your first stake. So to get the full offer you must bet at least £25. However you could bet as little as a fiver if you want, but then the bonus you receive will just be £5.

Customer services

We think this is pretty much the most important thing. If you want to speak to someone then you should be able to. You might want clarification of a rule. You may wonder about  a withdrawal method.

Rather than read through their comprehensive information on the website, you may just prefer to pick up the phone or Skype them. You can do this via a free-phone telephone number, via live chat on the website or you can email them.

However a word of warning, in our experience the email support is painfully slow. It may just be best to use one of the other methods. Certainly you don’t need to wait long to speak to a representative if you call them.

Hopefully you won’t ever need to use customer services, but it is crucial this first line of support is up to scratch when you do. In our tests it was impressive, with the notable exception of the email support – they need to improve the response time for that. Frankly anything over an hour to answer an email is a disgrace and they were not even replying within a few days.

Which nationalities can join?

Residents of most countries can join William Hill. However there is a fairly long list of exceptions. Before we list those disallowed nations, we will tell you why they are. There are certain local laws in these banned countries that means Hills can not accept their residents.

The bookmaker itself is legal and licensed in the UK and Gibraltar, so complies fully with European law. Because it is such a public company and a big, reputable operator, Hills tends to play it a bit safe in our view so the list is longer than most other betting firms.

These are the countries whose residents can’t join: America, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cuba, Cyprus, Denmark, France, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Hong Kong, Iran, Israel, Libya, Martinique, Myanmar (Burma), North Korea, Philippines, Réunion, Sudan, Syria, Turkey.

Does it have casino and poker?

Yes. It has the widest number of online casino games options you are ever likely to encounter in one place. These are the premier games on the premium software. The same goes for its online poker environment. Both are unsurpassed.

Negatives and annoyances

We only have a few gripes about this otherwise excellent website:

  1. Email customer support was woeful to the point of being effectively useless in our tests. Fortunately you can just call them up and that was great.
  2. Their automatic geo-targeting function is far too sensitive. We were testing from the UK and our account was frozen as a security measure on the basis we might be in a prohibited country. We were not, so the fault was with their over-sensitive systems. A telephone call ought to sort this out but the problem kept re-occurring. It was enough for any punter to give up on William Hill totally. They need to sort this nonsense out. It was an abysmal experience given you are dealing with one of the biggest names in the industry.
  3. The £25 free bet in the sports betting section is low compared to some competitors. The requirement to insert a promo code to get it is an unnecessary obstacle. It should just be given automatically once you have placed your first wager. However we always maintain a freebie should not be used as any sort of deciding factor about a site. It is a nice welcome bonus, but never a deal-breaker. Other elements of an operation are far more important.

William Hill Review Summary & Our Opinion

The annoyances are relatively minor when you consider the ease of use of the site was excellent otherwise. In addition, the plentiful array of sports betting markets mean you do not need to go anywhere else for a bet. Nobody presents more events to bet on than these guys. So the conclusion of our William Hill review has to be a resounding thumbs up. We are happy to recommend them to everyone.
