Bayern Munich travel to Werder Bremen this Saturday in search of another win and a chance to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table (2.30pm BST).
Bayern Munich are in exceptional form, both in the league and in European competition. They have managed to score five goals in their last two games while keeping a clean sheet in both matches.
The first victory came in a very impressive away win at Schalke last weekend. The tie was billed as one of the heavyweight match-ups in the German league, with plenty of threat from the home side. But this Bayern team once again showed their value as worthy contenders for the title by dispatching a Schalke side with ease.
Goals from Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos three minutes apart gave Jupp Heynckes’ side the three points. Again, it is the two young German internationals who are finding very good form in front of goal this season. Toni Kroos is definitely looking to be one of the exceptional attacking talents in all of Europe this season.
The win away to Wolfsburg on Tuesday night saw another goal from a midfield source in Bastian Schweinsteiger, while Mario Mandzukic bagged two goals against his former club. That’s five in five for the Croatian international.
The Bayern Munich defence is also looking especially strong. The presence of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer does a lot for the confidence of the defenders ahead of him, but Javi Martinez is proving to be an excellent acquisition in the defensive midfield role.
Martinez plays the holding role in the side, making it very difficult for the opposition to attack. He sits in the middle of the park, spraying passes around the field while Schweinsteiger uses his power to get up and down the pitch in a box-to-box manner.
It also has to be said that Franck Ribery was outstanding against Wolfsburg in the team’s last game. He hasn’t been among the goals yet this season, but it’s clear how his performances are adding to Bayern’s success. He showcased his athleticism with an overhead kick that sent the ball straight into the arms of Wolfsburg keeper Diego Banaglio.
Opponents Werder Bremen are looking in decent shape so far in the league. They’re currently in seventh place with four points from their last two games.
Thomas Schaaf’s team have Chelsea midfielder Kevin de Bruyne on loan for this season, while Marko Arnautovic is one of their danger men in attack.
It’s very unlikely we’ll see Bremen put in a winning performance against the league leaders this Saturday, even if it is at home. Bremen are undefeated at home in their two games so far, allowing two goals. But away from home they are noticeably more generous with goals conceded.
I fancy Bayern to be too strong for Bremen on the day. Bayern’s last game saw Xherdan Shaqiri come into the starting line-up and play very well from the attacking midfield position. It’s also worth mentioning that Bayern could have had more goals from their last game, with Mandzukic missing out on a number of good chances before getting his two goals.
