Serie A: Torino v Siena

Torino will want to put some additional distance between themselves and the bottom three when they host relegation threatened Siena at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday (11:30am GMT).

The Granata have performed solidly since gaining promotion back to the top flight and are 12th in the table with 20 points from four wins, nine draws and six defeats, with one point deducted from their total due to match fixing offences.

The cornerstone of Torino’s promotion campaign was a watertight defensive unit that conceded just 28 goals in 42 matches and it has continued to be their greatest strength in the top flight. Torino have the fifth-best defensive record in Serie A, with 22 conceded in 19 matches.

Scoring has proved to be more of a problem, though, with only five teams having scored less than their 20 goals to date. One of those teams is Siena, whose own total of 17 goes a long way to explaining their current predicament.

The Bianconeri were deducted six points for match fixing offences prior to the commencement of the season and it is that margin that currently separates them from another campaign in the top flight.

Giuseppe Iachini has overseen three defeats since replacing Serse Cosmi in mid-December, extending the club’s losing streak to five matches. He needs to turn things around quickly if Siena are to have any chance of avoiding what currently looks like an almost certain relegation.

This Preview’s Betting Tip: With both teams struggling in attack and Torino possessing a strong defensive record, it is unsurprising to note that matches involving these two teams this season have averaged a meagre 2.29 goals. They drew 0-0 when they met in Siena on the first day of the season and we expect a similarly low-scoring encounter on Sunday.
