Serie A: Palermo v Lazio Preview

Relegation-threatened Palermo have lost five of their last six Serie A matches and are in dire need of a positive result when they host Lazio on Saturday (5pm GMT).

The Rosanero are 19th in the table, five points short of safety, with 15 points from three wins, six draws and 11 defeats. They are yet to win on their travels and 80% of their current points haul has been obtained at home.

Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini replaced Giuseppe Sannino three matches into the season, but after a promising October and November has now failed to oversee a victory in over a month.

New recruits used to playing in formations similar to Gasperini’s preferred 3-4-3 have arrived since the start of January and easier fixtures await after the visit of Lazio. But if Palermo do not soon begin to pick up points their continued existence in Serie A will be very much in doubt.

Lazio are flying high at the other end of the table, just three points behind the league leaders Juventus with 42 points from 13 wins, three draws and four defeats.

The wing-based approach of new coach Vladimir Petkovic has yielded superb results, with wide men Stefano Mauri and Antonio Candreva topping the club’s assist charts.

The man who has often been on the end of their deliveries is Miroslav Klose, who has 10 goals from his 17 starts to date, but he will miss Saturday’s match due to a thigh injury. Lazio have failed to score on the three previous occasions this season that Klose has not been part of the starting line-up, losing twice and drawing once.

This Preview’s Betting Tip: Palermo are not in the best form, but have recorded three wins and three draws from their nine home matches. With Klose missing for Lazio, we believe Palermo are capable of securing at least a point.
