Following an embarrassing 4-1 defeat away to Juventus last weekend, Roma will be looking for a swift return to form when they host Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday (11:30am BST).
Roma were all but defeated within twenty minutes against Juventus, their defence failing to deal effectively with the home side’s movement in forward areas. Midfielders Claudio Marchisio and Arturo Vidal were able to run in behind at will, creating three goals that killed off Roma’s challenge before it had even begun.
The ineptitude of his side’s display provoked an incredulous response from coach Zdenek Zeman and from Roma director Walter Sabatini, who labelled it a “disastrous” performance. Sabatini also questioned the desire of a number of the players, presumably in an attempt to stimulate some sort of response for the visit of Atalanta.
If Roma can take any solace from last weekend it will be that for all their own problems this Sunday’s opponents fared even worse, going down 5-1 at home to Torino. One goal from the penalty spot, two from set-pieces and another two in open play were conceded, with Atalanta’s defending on all five leaving a lot to be desired.
Roma have enough quality in the final third to suggest that they should have little trouble breaking through the Atalanta defence. But they are always liable to leave themselves open on the break, with the nippy Argentine playmaker Maxi Moralez primed to take advantage.
