Two clubs who have both made strong starts to the 2012/13 season meet at the Stadio San Paolo on Wednesday (7.45pm, BST) as second place Napoli host third place Lazio.
The home side are currently undefeated, but came away from their weekend match against Catania disappointed not to have maintained a 100% win record. Catania were reduced to ten men just two minutes in, but a combination of determined defending and the heroics of goalkeeper Mariano Andujar kept Napoli at bay and resulted in a goalless draw.
Lazio coach Vladimir Petkovic, whose own side let their undefeated record slip by losing 1-0 at home to Genoa at the weekend, will have taken note of the success Catania enjoyed and may elect to adopt a similarly defensive strategy. Lazio were solid and assured in defending a Tottenham Hotspur onslaught in the Europa League last week and could very well do a similar number on Napoli.
Lazio dominated Genoa, having nine shots on target and a further 13 off target, but were unable to find a finishing touch. This can, perhaps, primarily be explained by the absence of German striker Miroslav Klose, scorer of three goals in his three starts this season.
Klose is likely to return to the starting line-up against Napoli and could have some joy against a defence that has conceded just twice so far this season, but has done so whilst giving up the fifth highest number of shots of any in the league. The majority of teams who have allowed similar amounts of shots have let in at least three times as many goals, so it may only be a matter of time before this comes back to haunt Napoli.
Betting Tip: With the right tactics, Lazio can be solid in defence and also carry an attacking threat, which should allow them to pick up something from this match. We would therefore suggest backing Lazio +0.5 on an Asian Handicap @ 39/40 with Bet365.
