After losing their unbeaten record to Juventus last weekend Napoli will be looking to return to winning ways when they host Chievo at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday (7.45pm BST).
Napoli had won six and drawn once prior to last weekend’s match and only succumbed to the reigning champions by a small margin, two goals in the last ten minutes giving Juventus a 2-0 victory in a tightly contested encounter.
The defeat was clearly disappointing, but coach Walter Mazzarri will otherwise have been delighted with the way in which his side have opened the campaign. Napoli are among the top four scorers in the league and have the joint second-best defensive record, conceding just five times in their eight matches to date.
Napoli have won all four of their home matches, taking the lead inside the opening half-hour of three of the four and will be confident of winning once more against a Chievo side who are struggling in the lower reaches of the table.
Eugenio Corini took over from Domenico Di Carlo on the Chievo bench in early October following a run of five consecutive defeats. His arrival has precipitated an upturn in fortunes, with a win over Sampdoria and a draw at home to Fiorentina yielding four points from his first two matches in charge.
There are, however, still obvious issues that are yet to be fully addressed, chiefly a defence that has kept just one clean sheet and conceded 15 goals so far this season. Against a potent Napoli attack a second shutout of the season seems unlikely.
Betting Tip: Napoli will be keen to assert themselves early on to banish the memories of last weekend’s defeat to Juventus. They have led at half time in three of their four home matches to date, while Chievo have conceded before the interval in five out of eight.
