German champions Borussia Dortmund make the trip to the Etihad Stadium for their tie with Man City in the latest epsiode from the Champions League ‘group of death’ (7.45pm BST, Wednesday, October 3).
Manchester City had to wait until the last few minutes of their game against Fulham on the weekend to find a winner. The late goal, which put City 2-1 up, came via substitute Edin Dzeko with his first touch.
The Bosnian striker is making a good case to be a starter in this game. Dzeko also scored the opening goal for City at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid two weeks ago.
Sergio Aguero is looking to be back to full fitness for Roberto Mancini’s side. The Argentine striker started the game on the weekend against Fulham and is sure to be a starter against Dortmund.
Micah Richards and Douglas Maicon are unavailable through injury so Pablo Zabaleta will likely take up the right-back spot. Jack Rodwell is also out with an injury and it’s likely we’ll see Javi Garcia start the game from the deep midfield role.
The Spaniard has proven to be a handful from set pieces for the Premier League champions. His height and power will be invaluable when challenging Dortmund’s centre-backs in aerial duels.
Man City are 12/1 & Dortmund 33/1 to win the Champions League outright – full betting here
The interesting thing about this match between the English and German champions is that neither are particularly well versed in the Champions League. It would be foolish to assume their domestic form will transfer quickly to European competition.
Dortmund looked out of their depth last season in Europe, finishing bottom of their group and never appearing to be the team seen regularly in the Bundesliga.
Man City also struggled to get out of their group 12 months ago, despite a good number of points.
City gave Real Madrid a really good go and could possibly have come away from the Bernabeu with something had Yaya Toure converted his chance just prior to Marcelo levelling the score.
But Dortmund will also be looking to see plenty of the ball in this game and Man City certainly shouldn’t assume that their home pitch will be enough to see them victorious.
Dortmund looked incredibly impressive on the weekend when they hosted Borussia Monchengladbach. Marco Reus grabbed two goals in a 5-0 route of Lucia Favre’s side.
Manchester City are likely to field Matija Nastasic once again alongside Vicent Kompany at the back. Dortmund centre-backs Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic will be looking to pressure the City back line whenever they go up for corners. Subotic got a goal from a corner on the weekend and it might have been two as he headed a corner onto the bar in the early stages of the game.
Besides Sven Bender still being out, Jurgen Klopp will have a full squad to choose from for this tie.
Man City v Borussia Dortmund Betting Tips
Both teams are capable of finding goals from a number of sources, but Dortmund will be a real handful for Manchester City.
- Man City are 10/11 to win this game (Betfred, BetVictor, William Hill) while Dortmund are biggest @ 7/2 (Ladbrokes). However I’m backing a draw @ 11/4 with Stan James. If forced to give the score line it would be 2-2 @ 18/1 with Coral.
- Yaya Toure was City’s key man in the game against Real Madrid. Yaya looks a good bet to score at any time @ 7/2 (William Hill).
