Lazio have made a strong start to the Serie A season and will be looking to maintain their good form when they host struggling AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday (7.45pm BST).
Former Young Boys coach Vladimir Petkovic has thus far proved wrong those who doubted his credentials, leading Lazio to five wins and two defeats in Serie A and four points from two matches in the Europa League.
Petkovic has formed a balanced side, currently fourth best in the league for both goals scored (12) and goals conceded (6), but one that is clearly reliant on its two primary attacking threats to gain three points on a regular basis. Creative midfielder Hernanes and prolific striker Miroslav Klose have between them scored nine of Lazio’s 12 goals this season.
That total is more than the entire AC Milan squad has managed so far in 2012/13. The Rossonieri have seven points from seven matches, having scored seven and conceded seven. They are currently 11th in the league and before the recent international break went down to a limp 1-0 defeat to Inter in the Milan derby.
At the moment there still appears to be high-level support for coach Massimiliano Allegri, but the patience of his superiors will surely wane if a similar pattern of results continues.
The pre-season departures of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva, along with a host of experienced professionals whose contracts had expired, have clearly significantly weakened the team. Allegri must also take a share of the blame, his constant tinkering with tactics and personnel doing little to help forge understanding or togetherness.
- Betting Tip: Lazio are in excellent form and are attractively priced at well above evens to defeat a struggling Milan side lacking clear focus or strategy. Therefore, back Lazio to win @ best odds of 6/4 at Coral.
