In potentially one of the most attractive fixtures of this weekend’s Serie A action, Fiorentina host Catania in a match that looks primed for goals (2pm BST, Sunday).
Fiorentina invested heavily in the summer following a disappointing 13th place finish last season. They poached coach Vicenzo Montella from Sunday’s opponents and brought in 18 new players (35 left the club).
One win and one defeat from their opening two matches is probably indicative of a team that is still finding its feet. The players are still in the process of developing their relationships with one another and Montella’s methods are yet to fully sink in.
Fiorentina have played some lovely possession football at times, with the likes of David Pizarro and Borja Valero capable of weaving intricate patterns through midfield, and the wing-backs Manuel Pasqual and Juan Cuadrado offering plenty of drive and incisive running. Up front they have the supremely talented Stevan Jovetic, scorer of all three of their goals this season.
But defensively they have not been quite as sound. They were flat-footed in conceding against Udinese and twice leaked goals from set-pieces in the 2-1 defeat to Napoli in week two. There is not a great deal of pace in their three-man defence, something that Catania look well placed to punish.
The Elefanti boast a dangerous front three in Hugo Barrientos, Gonzalo Bergessio and Alejandro Gomez, with Gomez, in particular, lightning quick over short distances. They have scored five goals in their two matches so far, yielding a draw and a victory, and have the necessary attributes to continue that scoring form on Sunday.
