Espanyol hosting Atletico Madrid on Sunday night in La Liga action promises to be one of the more one-sided matches this season (8.30pm BST).
To put it simply: Espanyol have been shocking and not just this season. They’re joint bottom of the league table with only one point so far. They’re leaking goals at home and away and are not finding ways to get among the goals themselves.
Espanyol have once again seen a high turnover of players this past summer, allowing for very little, if any, continuity going into the season.
They managed to scrape their only point at home to Athletic Bilbao two weeks ago, but Bilbao are also going through their own struggles this term. That game highlighted Espanyol’s weakness in surrendering a two goal lead but also finding an equaliser late in the game. Personally, I wouldn’t look to that game for any real positives moving forward from the side.
Espanyol are also looking at a terrible statistic of three players sent off so far in five league games. Adding to that, manager Mauricio Pochettino was sent off as well this season.
Atletico Madrid, however, are flying high and find themselves second in the league table with only Barcelona ahead of them. Diego Simeone’s team seem to be scoring goals for fun as of late, totalling 14 goals in their last four games in the league.
Radamel Falcao is still getting it done up front for Atletico. He’s scored in every league game this season so far except for the league opener against Levante. And let’s not forget his impressive display and hat-trick against Chelsea.
Simeone is finding a good balance in his side. He’s using Adrian Lopez much more from the bench in recent games, while Arda Turn continues to work well on the flank.
Diego Costa, returning this year from a loan spell last season, is also doing extremely well, creating goals and finding his own way to the net. The hard work is something that runs right through the team, with all of the players buying into Simeone’s drive for further success in the future. Remember, this is not a team that needs to rely on Falcao for goals.
Espanyol v Atletico Madrid Betting Tips
Atletico Madrid are the heavy favourites for this match, and it’s extremely easy to understand why. Espanyol are the worst defensive side in La Liga while Atletico are the best attacking side.
Atletico have also been known to leak goals, but they’re outscoring their opponents comfortably.
- I’m backing the away win for Atletico @ 11/10 with Stan James, Coral & William Hill.
- Bet on Radamel Falcao to get the first goal @ 4/1 with BetVictor or William Hill.
- Atletico have bags of goals in them but you always feel they’ll concede as well. For that, I’m also backing a final score of 4-1 @ 40/1 with Blue Square, Stan James & Coral.
