An exciting clash is on the cards tomorrow night (7.45pm GMT, Friday), as Chelsea face Atletico Madrid in Monaco for the UEFA Super Cup.
Chelsea are storming the Premier League, with an impressive attack consisting of a blossoming partnership between Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres.
The London team are not committed to any League duties this week, whereas Atletico will be playing their La Liga fixture on Monday. Does that mean we’ll see a fully strengthened Chelsea side? Almost certainly.
Fernando Torres has been in fine form so far this season. The Spaniard and former Atletico Madrid striker has two goals to his name so far in the Premier League. He looks a good shout to be among the goals again in this cup game and can be backed at 2/1 to score at any time with Coral Bookies (the next best price is 6/4 with BetVictor).
Di Matteo has been full of praise for his new signing Eden Hazard, but has been sure not to ignore the contribution of Juan Mata also. Both will be crucial in putting Torres through on goal.
The Chelsea manager also revealed that Yossi Benayoun, Florent Malouda and Marko Marin have not travelled for the game. However, I’d like to think this is a good opportunity to introduce Oscar and perhaps even Cesar Azpilicueta at some stage.
The tie against Atletico will be a good stage for Oscar. The physical battle won’t be as intense as in the Premier League and the UEFA Super Cup is certainly not high up on the list of priorities for Chelsea. Meanwhile, Azpilicueta is used to the fight from La Liga teams, having previously played for Osasuna. He’s a good right-back who is confident in his attacking ability. He’ll be a good addition to Chelsea’s squad.
In Atletico’s corner, the team are flying high after a convincing but surprising win over Athletic Bilbao on Monday. The problems Bilbao are facing at the moment are obvious, but I don’t believe many would have expected them to gift Atletico such an easy victory.
Bet365 betting odds on this UEFA Super Cup match:
5/4 Chelsea, 11/5 Atletico Madrid, 23/10 Draw
Manager Diego Simeone will be aware of Chelsea’s threat and their outstanding attacking options. Fortunately for the Argentine manager, he also has a phenomenal threat in Radamel Falcao in his attack.
Falcao netted a hat-trick on Monday at the Vicente Calderon, two of which were breathtaking finishes. He is a striker in form and, aside from Messi and Ronaldo, there can be few who would deny him the title as best natural goalscorer in Europe.
The way Atletico set themselves up means Falcao is always likely to score. He missed out on a goal in the first La Liga game of the season, but he’s more than capable of bagging against Chelsea. He is biggest odds of 11/5 with Coral to score at any time.
At this stage, the difference between Atletico and Chelsea’s previous opponents this season is that Chelsea haven’t faced a threat comparable to those in Simeone’s team. Yes, Newcastle are lauded for their attacking and attractive approach, but they really didn’t put up a huge fight at Stamford Bridge. The only team to give Chelsea a good go this season was Manchester City in the Community Shield.
I certainly see Atletico finding their way to goal in this game nd their depth of quality attacking players means they have a good chance of scaring Chelsea in this game.
Arda Turan will be one to watch. The winger had an excellent game against Bilbao on Monday and his trickery will cause Chelsea problems on their left flank.
Diego Simeone is extremely confident of his side’s chances to win this game, while still acknowledging Chelsea’s ability. Atletico have been there before when they beat European champions Inter Milan for the Super Cup two years ago.
Betting Tips Verdict:
- I believe Falcao will make the difference on the night and I’m going with Atletico Madrid to win at best odds of 12/5 with Stan James Bookmaker.
- Back Fernando Torres at 2/1 with Coral to ‘score at any time’ during this match. We can’t believe that stand-out price will last long, so it is worth knowing the next biggest price is 6/4 with BetVictor.
- Take Falcao to score at any time at 11/5 with Coral. If you miss that price then take a shade shorter odds of 2/1 with Ladbrokes.
