Olympic Football: Brazil v Honduras Tips & Preview

Brazil, who qualified out of their group with all three wins tucked away, will face a Honduras side who are unlikely to give them a prolonged scare (Saturday, 5pm).

Neymar has been exceptional throughout the group stages, and Chelsea’s new signing Oscar has unquestionably looked good enough to warrant the £25 million fee. He is the leading light for this Brazil side, and his performance against Belarus in game two was arguably one of the individual displays of the tournament.

He’s quick, unpredictable and has a locker full of artistic weapons. A goal and two assists capped an excellent game against Belarus. He will be the man Honduras will need to stop. Doubling up on him will only go so far, as that will leave spaces open for any one of Brazil’s other attacking talents.

Marcelo, the Real Madrid left-back, has also been sensational. His defensive work may need tweaking, but his attacking display can be mesmerizing.

Brazil’s big weakness, however, is the combination of their defence and goalkeeper. The young goalkeeper Neto, who is likely to start, has let in three goals thus far. And the attacking instincts of both Marcelo and Rafael at full-back leaves plenty of empty space in their own area.

Again, they can be got at, but Brazil’s ability to hold on to the ball will be their greatest ally. Their strikers are capable of being clinical in front of goal, as Neymar, Alexandre Pato and Leandro Damiao have all netted in the competition.

Considering the huge disappointments of Spain and Uruguay at the Olympics, many will fancy Brazil for the gold. There is no team left in the tournament who are good enough to beat them, and barring a freak result, this quarter-final should just be a formality.
