In-form Inter Milan travel to the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara on Sunday (2pm BST) to face a Bologna side currently entrenched in Serie A’s relegation zone following two consecutive defeats.
Following a patchy start to the campaign, Inter have really found their rhythm over the last month or so, winning four matches on the bounce in Serie A, scoring six and conceding just once. They are now fourth, just four points shy of leaders Juventus.
Inter’s upturn in fortune has coincided with coach Andrea Stramaccioni’s switch to a three-man central defence, first in the form of a 3-5-1-1 (in the 2-0 win away to Chievo) and then in a 3-4-1-2 (in subsequent victories over Fiorentina, Milan and Catania).
The Nerazzurri had been too rigid beforehand, the midfield forced to make too many sacrifices to cover for rampaging full-backs tasked with providing width in an otherwise narrow formation. The addition of the third centre-back has supplied the necessary cover, allowing the full-backs to become wing-backs and the central midfielders to function more effectively.
Bologna coach Stefano Pioli is yet to find a similar magic formula to solve his own team’s woes. The Rossoblu have won two, drawn one and lost five in their eight matches to date, including a run of three defeats in the last four.
They are not being blown away – all three recent defeats were by a one goal margin – but are nevertheless struggling to pick up points.
- Our Preview’s Betting Tip: Bologna have won one, drawn one and lost one at home so far this season, while Inter have won all four of their away fixtures to date. With Inter in excellent form we can see them extending their 100% away record, so back Inter Milan to win @ best odds of 6/5 at Pinnacle.
